Why serve in the local church when others are already involved? What could I get involved in? How important is my involvement? These are all questions we have asked ourselves. All of them can be summed up in one question: why get involved in your local church? Here are three reasons to convince you of the importance of serving in the church.

1) God wants us to put ourselves at the service of others. 

Serving one another according to the gifts God has given us is a commandment. When we serve in the local church, we are doing what Jesus asks of us. Indeed, obeying God brings joy; it is a way to give Him thanks for what He provides and to express gratitude for His sacrifice on the cross. Serving is a form of praise to our Lord. After all, God saved us so that we might perform good works (Ephesians 2:10). We are not Christians because we perform this service or do all these good works; rather, serving our Lord Jesus is a joy for us.

"As good stewards of the manifold grace of God, let each of you use the gift you have received to serve others" – 1 Peter 4:10

By the very nature of things, serving one another takes place first and foremost within the local church. God has placed us in a local church so that we may build ourselves up and build up others. Since we have received gifts that are graces from God, let us use them so that the members of our church may benefit from them.

2) The church is a body in which every member is useful. 

God’s Word describes the Church as a body with many members, each having a different function (Romans 12:4–5). Each of us is a member of the body of Christ. God has given each of us different gifts (Romans 12:6–8). These gifts were given for the common good (1 Corinthians 12:7). Therefore, when certain members fail to use the gifts God has graciously bestowed upon them, they deprive their congregation of those gifts. Above all, do not think that some functions are less important than others! It is written: "The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I have no need of you,' nor again the head to the feet, 'I have no need of you'" (1 Corinthians 12:21). No matter what gifts you possess, you must use them for the good of the church. We can draw a parallel with family life at home, where each person must perform a different task. These tasks foster a sense of belonging to our family.

3) Bonds with other Christians are forged during service.

Getting involved in the church allows us to build strong friendships based on our shared faith. For instance, through his involvement in ministry, Paul became friends with Barnabas and Silas. The same applies to everyone: the more we get involved in ministry, the more we build friendships with other Christians who also desire to follow Jesus. Let us be zealous! In conclusion, start looking at your gifts and interests, and pray that God shows you where He wants you to be. Let us encourage one another to serve and get involved in our local churches!
